Tests and Temptations
Over the years as a pastor, I’ve been asked many times by sincere believers who are going through difficult trials, “Is this trial from Satan or God?”. I tell them the answer is both! It’s two sides of the same coin. God is allowing this trial to test your faith. Satan, on the other hand, is using it to tempt you to sin by not trusting God to use it for your good and His glory. How you respond to the trial determines if it’s a test of faith or temptation to sin.
If you give in to the temptation to sin, Satan has successfully used it defeat you and dishonor God. On the other hand, if you respond to the test in loving obedience, you’re edified, and God is glorified through you.
As a believer the choice is yours. As 1 Corinthians 10:13 reminds us:
“No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man: and God is faithful; who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you’re able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it”
Because of this promise, God wants you to keep your eyes fixed on Him, focused on pleasing Him, and what He’s doing in your life and not on what Satan may be up to. With this assurance, you never need to be defeated, but can face every trial knowing that God’s with you and the victory is already yours in Christ.
