Doing God’s Word
For us as Christians, it’s critical that we’re not just hearers of God’s Word, but also doers of it as well. It’s not enough for us to just simply know what scripture says, we also need to be doing what scripture says too. The reality is we’re to do more than just listen to God’s Word, we’re to live it!
Moreover, there’s a real danger for us in hearing God’s Word and not heeding it. We’re warned that it leads to self-deception and spiritual delusion. We can think because we’ve heard God’s Word taught accurately and agree with what’s said, that we’re safe. But scriptural instruction is never given to us for information only, but for application to our lives!
In James 1:22-25 we’re warned of the danger of spiritual delusion by merely hearing but not obeying God’s Word.
“(22) But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. (23) For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; (24) for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. (25) But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man shall be blessed in what he does.”
God’s Word is a scriptural mirror that reveals your true spiritual character and condition. Like the mirrors in your home show you what you look like physically, God’s Word shows you what you look like spiritually.
God wants you to look at your life in the mirror of His Word to see if you’re truly obeying what He says to do. Ultimately, God’s goal is to see the reflection of His Son Jesus Christ in your life. By merely hearing God’s Word and not heeding it, you only fool yourself and quickly forget what God’s shown you about your true spiritual state.
But for believers who obediently put into practice what they hear, God promises His spiritual blessing for not just listening to His Word but living it also!
