America's Moral Free Fall

The time of the Judges in Israel’s history was characterized by the phrase, “... every man did that which was right in their own eyes” (Judges 21:25). Each person rejected the standard of morality given by God, i.e. His Law (Torah) and looked to themselves as the determiner of morality. As a result, the nation of Israel fell deep into a moral free fall and corruption! This is exactly what we see happening today in America (and much of the world)!

Recent surveys that focused upon the basis of morality are shocking, especially among young people! For example: Americans age 18 to 29 are least likely —only 15% — to turn to the Bible for moral guidance and instead look to themselves (29%) or to family (25%). This compares with about one-quarter of older Americans, including 23% of those ages 30 to 49, 25% of those 50 to 64, and 26% of those over 64.1

According to Dr. George Barna the percentage of adult Americans who claim the Bible is the basis of moral truth has been cut in half since 1995. He goes on to say, “Any society that substitutes humanity’s latest and greatest ideas for God’s truth and authority is on the fast track to ruin!”2

Len Munsil, President of the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University, wrote “The consequences of rejecting God’s truth are undeniable. We know that what we believe dictates how we behave. Today, we are seeing the moral breakdown permeating the culture around us, and it is playing out with devastating consequences in our culture”.3

He is right! The devastating consequences are being seen in almost every city across America today: the riots, the civil disobedience, the looting, the “take-over” of six city blocks in a major city, and the list goes on-and-on! A segment of our society is “doing that which is right in their own eyes”, ignoring laws and those in authority and setting themselves up as the determiner of morality. In their way of thinking there is no standard of truth, i.e., the Bible, the U.S. Constitution or the Laws of our land, rather for them, they determine their own standard of moral truth, which changes as their wishes-and-whims change — which can be daily or sooner! What they think is morally right may not be right for you, but that is “okay” because, for them, there is no standard of truth! Therefore, in there way of thinking, there is no right and/or wrong – everything is relative!

The apostle Paul warned that such times were coming, and, beloved, they’re here! In his second letter to Timothy, his son-in-the-faith, he said, “But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.” (2 Timothy 3:1-5, emphasis mine) Without a doubt we are seeing Paul’s description of the “difficult times” lived out before us today in living color! Yes we are living in extremely difficult times!

But, and this is important, Paul did not tell Timothy to throw up his hands in despair or have a defeated attitude, rather he continued to write, Now you followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance, persecutions, and sufferings, . . . Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of . . .(2 Timothy 3:10-14, emphasis mine) In essence Paul told Timothy “don’t give up, don’t be defeated or in despair, rather continue to live godly, hold on to the truth that you have learned and been convinced of, and be willing, if necessary, to suffer for living a godly life!” Everything Paul told Timothy to do is what we MUST BE DOING,

TOO! If Christ does not come soon, we can be assured that “evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse,” but that does not change our responsibility to live godly. Will our country ever see a turn-around and return to the wonderful country some of us we enjoyed for many, many years? I don’t know (I personally doubt it), but even if it does not, we MUST determine to live by the standard of Truth given to us in God’s Word. We MUST continue in the things we have learned and become convinced of, we must not waver!

If God is gracious to allow our country to turn around, it will not come through a political movement, nor the secular media or thinkers, nor our educational institutions, it will only come through Believers who are living in obedience to God’s Word and proclaiming God’s power to change lives, namely, the gospel! George Barna said it well, he wrote, “. . . much of the responsibility to change the trajectory of the nation lies in the hands of the Church and the family unit. The restoration of biblical truth can facilitate the turnaround of a declining society. It starts with churches relentlessly and consistently teaching biblical truth principles for practical application within all dimensions of life. It requires churches equipping parents to teach those truth principles to their children. It demands parents placing their young people in educational, relational, and entertainment environments where God’s truth principles are respected and practiced. It advances by electing public officials who pass civil laws in harmony with God’s religious Law. Restoring our foundations will be neither easy nor quick, but such a turnaround can happen if a remnant of God’s people devotes themselves to such a process of cultural deliverance.”4

We also need to be reminded that Biblical Truth is not color blind! There is not white truth, or black truth, or brown truth, or red, or yellow truth — Biblical Truth is TRUTH, PERIOD and applies to every person regardless of race, political affiliation, or family background!

After King Solomon finished the Temple and dedicated it, God spoke these words to him. He said, “If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14). I realize that America is not Israel and the American people are not His chosen people (except those who are saved!), and there is no direct application of this verse to America, but I do believe God’s grace is the same today towards America as it was for Israel. If “healing to our land” is going to happen, it MUST begin with God’s people, i.e., the saved! We MUST “humble ourselves, pray, seek His face and turn from our wicked ways.”

In other words, there must be a REVIVAL among God’s people first and then reach out to the unsaved! One observer of the 1734 revival at Jonathan Edward’s church in Northampton, Mass. wrote, “It pleased God ..to display his free and sovereign mercy in the conversion of a great multitude of souls in a short space of time, turning them from a formal, cold and careless profession of Christianity, to the lively exercise of every Christian grace, and the powerful practice of our holy religion.”5

A revival that began in a local church spread across America in one of the greatest revival movements to sweep across our country. Would God in a display of His free and sovereign mercy do the same today? None of us know, but let us never forget that “judgment (investigation, evaluation) must first begin in the household of God” (1 Peter 4:17)!

My wife and I sat with a group of Generation Z/Millennial age young people last evening and heard them challenged to be among Believers across America who will live fully and obediently to the Truth of God’s Word even if it results in persecution (most likely, it will). This challenge must not be heard only by the younger generations, it MUST be heard by ALL who claim to be disciples (followers) of Christ! In a time such as ours when “every person is doing what is right in their own eyes”, we, God’s people, must “humble ourselves and pray and seek His face and turn from our wicked ways” and be committed to obey the Truth of God’s Word! We must not change or manipulate the truth of God’s Word to align with our thinking, rather, we must allow the Truth of God’s Word to TRANSFORM US!

I close with the apostle Paul’s plea to the Believer’s in Rome. He wrote, “Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind [through the Word,] so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:1-2, bracketed text mine).

For the LOVE of God’s people,

Pastor Ron Finch (retired)
